The Protectors

During the High and Late Middle Ages, Gothic architecture took precedence and gargoyles were highly featured in cathedral churches. Some were depicted as humans or animals, hideous or comical. One would question their role in such a religious structure. While its purpose was architectural, some believed gargoyles warded off evil spirits and protected those it surrounded.

Creating these images, I used a variation of Intaglio printmaking techniques. While some are depicted as frightening, others are docile. The gargoyles you see are my perception of them and some of which can be found in the Notre Dame Cathedral in France.
